“China is now the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases. Unless we have a solution to coal use in China, we definitely don’t have a solution to climate change,” said NSWMC chief executive Dr Nikki Williams.
Williams will be addressing carbon capture and storage technology at the Gunnedah Basin Coal Conference next month.
She threw her support behind the technology but said there were challenges in identifying appropriate storage sites.
The Gunnedah conference will take place on September 16–17 and speakers include Whitehaven Mining chief executive Rob Stewart, Caroona Coal Project (BHP Billiton) general manager Stephen David and Port of Newcastle chief executive Gary Webb.
