APEC members will look to improve their energy market efficiency and address barriers to trade and investment in energy in the region.
Ferguson labelled Australia as one of the world’s energy superpowers which saddled it with environmental responsibilities.
“That comes with the weight of enormous responsibility because energy security is vital to underpin the continuing economic growth of our neighbours in the Asia-Pacific,” Ferguson said.
“It also comes with the responsibility to be part of the solution to the environmental consequences of that economic growth in the context of climate change and pollution pressures.”
Last month the Rudd Government launched a carbon research centre, the Global Carbon Capture and Storage Institute, which will promote research into low-emission technology for coal projects.
