Supplier GE Energy said the plant was commissioned ahead of schedule and would cut mine emissions by about 1.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per year.
Methane has 21 times the greenhouse-warming potential of carbon dioxide.
The 15-engine, 45.6-megawatt power plant, contracted by Energy Developments, is accredited under the New South Wales government’s Greenhouse Gas Abatement Scheme.
The 15 3MW GE Energy gas engine units will create electricity for the mine, with Energy Developments selling surplus output to the national electricity grid.
GE has supplied its Jenbacher engines to several of Australia’s largest coal mine methane projects.
