The project is a few months behind schedule but will cement RBCT’s status as the largest single exporting terminal in the world, while Newcastle exports more coal through two terminals.

“The Phase V project has delivered on everything except for the new terminal control system with which we have had challenges,” RBCT chief executive Raymond Chirwa said.

“We are working on systems integration, which admittedly is taking time.”

On completion of Phase V, RBCT is expected to be 30% black-owned compared to less than 1% in 2004.

Anglo American, BHP Billiton and Xstrata each own a stake of more than 20% of RBCT.
