According to the office of Pennsylvania governor Edward Rendell, the company will move to a proposed 44,500-square-foot building at the Meadowridge Business Park in Perry Township, amid the numerous coal mines of northern Appalachia and close to Pittsburgh.
The move will help retain SDI’s 146 existing employees in Pennsylvania.
“This was a competitive project and SDI’s decision to move its global headquarters to Pennsylvania is a direct result of the commonwealth’s economic development efforts,” Rendell said.
“This project, and the 98 high-paying jobs it will create, is great news for southwestern Pennsylvania and its workforce.”
SDI has worked for more than 30 years in geotechnical construction, and provides ground modification services, mechanically excavated shafts and gas transmission facilities for the mining industry in North and South America. The company recently expanded its services to cover advances in mining and drilling techniques related to Marcellus Shale region opportunities.
“The steady growth of SDI’s services in civil and energy construction has positioned the corporation to make this move at a very strategic time,” SDI co-founder Scott Kiger said.
The project was coordinated through Rendell’s Action Team, and the state provided the company with $US2.1 million in funding for the move, comprising a $2 million grant from the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program and $110,000 in job training assistance.
