The GCCSI will also be announcing $18 million for demonstration projects by other recipients of the grants from Australia, Romania, Netherlands and the US.

The GCCSI was set up by the Australian federal government in 2008 at a cost of $100 million and receives $100 million to give to carbon capture and storage projects around the world.

The GCCSI seeks to coordinate funding and research for new projects, with the aim of facilitating the development of 20 commercial-scale international CCS demonstration projects by 2020.

Investment into technology that enables the capture and storage of carbon dioxide is a core pillar of the federal government's pollution reduction strategy.
