This was partly offset by geological issues and a subsequent longwall move at its Grasstree coal mine in Q4 2016.

Total export metallurgical coal production decreased 2%, primarily due to the sale of the Foxleigh mine, which was completed in August.

Production of export thermal coal was impacted by the sale of Callide, which completed on October 31. Excluding Callide, production increased 7% to 7.9Mt due to productivity driven improvements across all operations in South Africa and Cerrejon in Colombia.

In South Africa, export thermal coal production increased 16% to 4.5Mt.

Production increased at all the export mines driven by productivity improvements following the roll-out of the Anglo Operating Model.

The Goedehoop mine also benefitted from plant modifications that enabled the production of an export product from previously discarded coal.

Export sales volumes at 5.8Mt exceeded export production as coal produced for the domestic market was sold in the export market for enhanced value when conditions allowed.

Eskom related production increased 36% with New Vaal dragline maintenance impacting production in Q4 2015, improved performance from Kriel's underground operations and increased delivery against the domestic supply contract at Kleinkopje.

Cerrejon's attributable production increased 7% to 2.8Mt due to improved productivity and favourable weather conditions.
