However, there will be a new energy minister, anti-wind energy campaigner Angus Taylor, who will replace Josh Frydenberg who has been elevated to the position of Deputy Prime Minister and Treasurer.

Canavan was seen as a champion for the coal mining industry in Central Queensland during the contentious debate around Adani's proposed $16.5 billion Carmichael project in the Galilee Basin.

"It is an honour and a privilege to continue serving as Minister for Resources and Northern Australia in the incoming Morrison Coalition Government," Canavan said.

"I look forward to working with the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister and entire Liberal National team to continue to grow our world class resource sector, develop the opportunities that patently exist in northern Australia and fight for the jobs of hardworking Australians who work in our resources industry and in northern Australia.

"As an LNP Senator for Queensland, my focus has always been on delivering for the people of Queensland."
