THE Northern Territory wants the federal government to help finance mining projects that are close to starting work to unlock about $1.5 billion in capital investment that could contribute more than $500 million a year to the local economy and create more than 400 jobs.

According to the report the government needs to focus on growing five main sectors: energy (renewables and gas); manufacturing (gas and non-gas); agribusiness; resources; and tourism.

The idea was floated by the NT economic reconstruction commission in its first report to NT chief minister Michael Gunner, as part of 15 immediate recommendations to help attract and secure investment
