SME mining suppliers get Qld govt backing

THE Queensland government is backing small businesses through its Business Boost program to spur economic growth and improve safety standards for mining suppliers in Central Queensland.

The program would also help businesses in the region grow and improve their efficiency and productivity.

Member for Rockhampton Barry O'Rourke said the program would also help businesses in the region grow and improve their efficiency and productivity.

"The type of grants, business requirements and the application process are a direct result of feedback from the Small Business Roadshow, which toured around Queensland earlier this year," he said.

Owners of Gracemere's L&H Fabrication and Maintenance, Hayley and Lewis Songoro, said a $11,592 Business Boost grant would allow them to overhaul their workplace health and safety systems for their expanding steel fabrication business.

"We are so excited for this opportunity because this grant will help us develop and get a customised workplace health and safety system in place," they said.

"We also do a lot of onsite maintenance, repair and installation work within the local community and mining areas.

"This grant will help us to achieve certification to national standards and allow us to take our business to the next level."

Employment and small business minister Di Farmer said backing small business was at the heart of the Queensland government's $14.5 billion Economic Recovery Plan.

"Small businesses are the backbone of our local communities, and we want to support them, their families and their customers," she said.
