THE NEW South Wales coal industry remains in good health with 164 million tonnes of coal exported from the state in 2021, just 1% lower than the 2020 result and almost 30% higher than a decade ago, according to Coal Services data.

The strong growth in demand for NSW coal was led by India.

This is despite China's ban on Australian coal, the impact of COVID-19, and repeated calls by environmentalists to wind down the coal industry.
