SEVENTEEN miners were killed on Wednesday morning after a fire broke out in a coal mine in northeast China, according to official news service Xinhua.

There were 30 people working underground when the fire, caused by the spontaneous combustion of coal, started at 7.30am on Wednesday local time at the Jin'an coal mine in the Dongliau County of Liaoyuan City.

 

The bodies of the dead miners were recovered yesterday afternoon.

 

A spokesperson for the provincial coal industry bureau said the miners had died of suffocation.
