The extension, coined E-Mine, will be located primarily in Tucker County, West Virginia, 10 miles from the current D-Mine in Garrett County, Maryland.

 

The mine is expected to produce 18.5 million tons of coal over the next 6.5 years

 

Mettiki has gained permits from the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) for on-site disposal of scalp rock and underground mining.

 

The underground mining permit is still subject to appeal by a third-party intervener. As reported by in May, the DEP permit approval had generated some controversy within the community and the DEP because of the potential for acid mine drainage.

 

Mettiki Coal is operated by master limited partnership Alliance Resource Partners. The longwall produces medium sulfur coal from the 84 inch Upper Freeport coal seam. The mine produced 3.25 million tons in 2003.
