Philippines to buy Australian coal

AUSTRALIAN coal producers will be lining up for a piece of a multi-million dollar contract with Philippines National Power after Filipino President Gloria Arroyo announced it would source 25% of its coal from Australia over the next two years.

The announcement was made coinciding with a visit to the Philippines by Australian Prime Minister John Howard.

 

As part of this deal National Power will purchase 975,000t of coal from Australia in the next year alone, worth close to $50 million.

 

According to news reports, talks have already begun with several Australian coal producers. Published on Mining News July 15.
