Fifty-year coal fire extinguished

ABC News reported the fire - which burned 12 million tonnes of coal - was responsible for cave-ins in the Xinjiang Province that destroyed roads and homes and emitted poisonous smoke.

The ABC News report explained firefighters bore into the coal bed, pumped water and slurry into the hole and deprived the fire of oxygen to put out the blaze.
