When the project is completed in 2011, Abbot Point’s capacity will have increased to 50 million tonnes per annum.
"This 70-metre high shiploader weighs 1380 tonnes and I'm proud to say is made entirely from Australian steel," Queensland Transport Minister Rachel Nolan said.
The shiploader, which took contractor John Holland two years to fabricate, will load on average 7200 tonnes per hour.
John Holland energy and resources general manager Brendan Petersen said the project was delivered on time and on budget, and exceeded delivery and safety targets.
The shiploader construction contract forms part of a $287 million dual contract awarded to John Holland by North Queensland Bulk Ports in August 2008.
In addition to the new shiploader, the Abbot Point X50 expansion marine works contract has seen John Holland construct a second 500m-long berth and associated jetty conveyor and transfer tower, which will further expand export capacity at the terminal.
Getting the shiploader from Brisbane to Abbot Point was a major logistical exercise with the movement of the ship under the Gateway Bridge dependent on low tide and weather.
