US university planning coal-fired steam plant

OFFICIALS from Ball State University have released plans to build a new $US48 million coal-fired steam plant on the campus in Muncie, Indiana.

The university’s existing coal-fired heating facility will be replaced with the new construction, which will include the replacement of four coal-fired stoker boilers with four 100,000lbs per hour fluidized bed boilers as well as a new baghouse.

Pending approvals for the project, design and construction firms will be selected. A northern autumn 2006 construction start date has been set, with anticipated completion in the autumn of 2007.
