Maxwell previously was BHP president minerals exploration.

Prior to joining BHP he headed Citigroup’s global mining research group after exploration and business development roles with Anglo American and Rio Tinto.

BHP group executive and chief executive ferrous and coal Marcus Randolph said Maxwell had invaluable global experience and a “deep understanding of BHP’s operating model and the energy coal market”

Maxwell’s role is to be filled by BHP vice president strategy and development, base metals Danny Malchuk.

Malchuk joined the base metals division in 2002 in business development and was asset leader joint ventures before being appointed to his strategy role in 2007.
