Stats prove carbon tax worked, says Milne

THE latest Greenhouse Gas Inventory report shows nationwide emissions fell 1.1% in the year to March 2014, smashing the previous record of -0.8%, set in the year to December 2013.

The figures prove that under the carbon price Australia’s emissions were actually falling faster, according to Greens leader Christine Milne.

“These figures prove that the government’s so-called mandate to repeal the emissions trading scheme was based on lies,” she said.

“Since the carbon price was repealed, emissions from the electricity sector have gone way up. It’s clear to see Tony Abbott has turned the tide in the wrong direction.”

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop was roundly condemned by developing nations at the UN Climate Summit in New York last week because of the government’s stance on emissions.

“Now there’s extra proof that Abbott’s Australia is leading the world in going backwards on climate change,” Milne said.
