Near-disaster canoe protest

A 226m COAL carrier vessel narrowly avoided running over 40 climate change protesters in Newcastle’s harbour on Friday morning, the local newspaper reported.

“Police on jet skis were forced to tow protesters out of the ship’s path,” the Newcastle Herald reported.

“Despite the intervention, no arrests were made.”

The protesters, led by the traditionally dressed Pacific Climate Warriors on home-made wooden canoes and accompanied by more standard variety protesters on kayaks, planned to blockade Newcastle’s port to raise awareness about climate change and rising sea levels.

The Pacific Island-based protest group is funded by, one of the organisations behind the Stopping the Australian Coal Export Boom strategy document leaked to media a couple of years ago.
