Adani lands indigenous support

ADANI Mining has struck a comprehensive indigenous participation plan (IPP) over its coal plans in Queensland – providing evidence there is support from the Wangan and Jagalingou indigenous people despite reports to the contrary.

The implementation of the IPP and associated indigenous land use agreement is expected to provide a direct benefit of at least $250 million in business development, jobs, and training opportunities to traditional owner groups spanning Adani's operations over the half-life of the company's projects (30 years).

The IPP projects cover various revenue-making projects for either the Juru, Birriah, Jangga, plus Wangan and Jagalingou peoples.

The following statements from the relevant indigenous groups were made to the IPP:

Irene White, Wangan and Jagalingou native title applicant said: “We welcome the opportunity to come together today to meet with the other traditional owners across the project who have already established ILUA agreements with Adani. We are committed to working together to achieve positive employment, training and business development outcomes that will be of benefit to our people. The indigenous participation plan is about the power of opportunity for the Wangan and Jagalingou people – and helping deliver power to some of the hundreds of millions of people in India who lack access to it.”

Algon Walsh, Birriah native title applicant added: “Birriah have established an ILUA with Adani that locks in training, employment and contracting opportunities for our people. We look forward to working with traditional owners across the project to ensure that we all get the very best outcomes possible for our peoples out of this huge project that address the appalling statistics experienced by Australia’s first peoples."

Angelina Akee, chair of the Kyburra Munda Yalga (Juru) Aboriginal Corporation Registered Native Title Body Corporate said: “We look forward to working with Adani to achieve their indigenous participation plan commitments, particularly their 7.5% indigenous employment target, and to protect our cultural heritage and environmental values at Abbot Point and across our traditional lands. We welcome the opportunity to come together and work in partnership with all the traditional owners for the project.”

Colin McLennan, Chair of Bulganunna Aboriginal Corporation Registered (Jangga) Native Title Body Corporate asaid: “Our work under our ILUA with Adani starts with training our people so that they can take advantage of the project’s opportunities. We hope that all other traditional owner groups will have the same opportunities to work with Adani to achieve their 10% Indigenous training target. Our agreement with Adani provides our people with hope for the future, the opportunity to change their lives for their benefit and the benefit of their families.”
