SME/PCMIA conference ready to roll

THE Pittsburgh section of the Society for Metallurgy, Mining and Exploration and the Pittsburgh Coal Mining Institute of America is about to welcome hundreds of people from around the industry to their annual joint meeting in Pennsylvania.

The event is scheduled for October 27 and 28 at the Hilton Garden Inn-Southpointe outside Pittsburgh. Its four technical sessions include gas well impacts on mining, water and environmental issues, special engineering projects and a panel discussion about the industry five years post-MINER Act.

Some of the presentations include:

  • Natural gas development and its impact on underground coal mining – Gary Slagel, Consol Energy
  • Mitigation techniques for mine subsidence impacts on streams – Mark Haibach, CEC
  • Ground control analysis and design: American Energy Corporation, Century slope – John Stankus, Keystone Mining Services
  • Carbon monoxide: the silent killer – Jennifer Groves, Masimo

Keynote addresses will also be offered by Pennsylvania Coal Association president George Ellis, Alpha Natural Resources northern Kentucky operations president Allen Dupree and SME president John Murphy.

The gathering, which will also include a job fair for students and a room for vendor booths, will close with a luncheon for attendees.
