The announcement marks the ninth consecutive year InformationWeek has ranked Arch as one of the top innovators.

"The 2014 InformationWeek Elite 100 highlights companies that are leading this digital business revolution, redefining business models and reshaping industries," said InformationWeek editor in chief Rob Preston.

For 2014, the assessment was narrowed from 500 organisations to 100 organisations.

InformationWeek Elite 100 looked at the technology-based investments, strategies and results of some of the best-known organisations in the US.

"We're deploying technology that facilitates efficient data collection and rapid analysis of trends to support a culture of prevention” said Arch Coal vice-president David Hartley.

“Our strategic effort to couple information technology with our key performance indicators allows Arch to do more with less in a challenging business environment”, he continued.

Arch Coal ranked 64, taking out the top spot for St. Louis.

The overall winner was Australian pharmaceutical company Pfizer followed by Capital One Financial in second place and retail food chain Kroger in third.
