Miners in the Illawarra Regional Information Service survey on average ranked their job security at 1.55 out of five according to the Illawarra Mercury.

“The next lowest were retail workers at 3.08,” the newspaper reported.

“However, miners also ranked highest for job satisfaction – at 3.75.”

IRIS executive director Simon Pomfret said the results showed that miners liked what they were doing.

"But they understand what's happening in the industry-wide picture and they know there are problems out there for the workforce in the mining sector," he reportedly said.

Professional, finance and technical workers had the strongest job security ranking (3.92) in the survey, with food services (3.82) and health care (3.47) also in the top three fields.

BHP Billiton subsidiary Illawarra Coal made 85 positions redundant in late June.

In July, Wollongong Coal warned it would retrench 200 workers by closing down the Russell Vale longwall mine if it did not receive timely federal government approval to extract the first 400m of a planned expansion panel.
