Mineworkers to lobby against FIFO at BHP AGM

MINEWORKERS will be attending BHP Billiton’s annual general meeting in Adelaide tomorrow to protest against the company’s policy of using 100% FIFO workers at some of its new coal projects such as the Caval Ridge mine in Queensland.

Workers from the Goonyella Riverside, Blackwater No 1, Gregory, Saraji, Peak Downs mines in Queensland and the Westcliff and Mount Arthur mines in NSW will be attending the AGM, the Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union said.

Among the major concerns of the miners’ union are that locals are unable to apply for jobs at some BHP mines and FIFO workers are denied choice about where they live.

CFMEU representatives will present a petition calling on BHP’s CEO Andrew Mackenzie to end the company’s 100% policy at the new mines in Qld’s Bowen Basin.
