The contractor received a letter of intent to enter into the deal from AAMC.

The two-year services contract covers surface mining of the pit plus the greenfield Dawson North operation near Moura which was closed in February 2009 during a tough period for the state’s coal industry.

“This is an incredible opportunity to work with a well respected mining company and recognises our ability to work closely with our clients to deliver fantastic results,” Leighton Contractors’ resources division executive general manager Steven Keyser said.

“This opportunity will enable Leighton Mining to provide a range of services at the mine that will support and add value to its future development,” Leighton Mining general manager Greg Fokes said.

“It will also provide us with a platform to build a collaborative and strong relationship with Anglo American.”

The Dawson mine rolls in three adjacent mining areas which stretch across 60 kilometres while the lease area is almost twice that length according to Leighton.

The company said the mine has more than 280 million tonnes of existing coal reserves.
