The body of the 41-year-old man, whose name was not released, was found Tuesday at the bottom of the 50m high wall, a day after he went missing.

The miner did not return to his home in Moura after his shift on Monday at the Dawson mine, run by Anglo Coal Australia.

Over the past 30 years there have been three major mining disasters near the township. In 1975, 13 miners died in an explosion in a mineshaft near Moura; in 1986, 12 miners died in an explosion at the Moura Underground No. 4 mine; and 11 miners were killed in another explosion in 1994.

Anglo Coal Australia said the company was cooperating with police and government investigations.
