Mine owners Fording Canadian Coal Trust and Teck Cominco did not give further details of the accident but said authorities had been notified immediately.

The cause of the accident is now under investigation by the Mines Inspector from the BC Ministry of Energy, Mines & Petroleum Resources, BC Coroners Service, the RCMP, and the Greenhills Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee.

Elk Valley Coal is the world's second largest exporter of metallurgical coal, supplying high-quality coal products to the international steel industry.

The Greenhills mine produces 4.5 million tonnes per annum.
