Richards Bay delays capacity upgrade

THE expansion of South Africa’s Richards Bay Coal Terminal from 72 million tonnes of capacity to 91Mt will be delayed until the December quarter, missing its July 1 deadline.

Reported by Bloomberg, RBCT chief operating officer Raymond Chirwa said a risk assessment found the project would not be ready in time and added that contractors could consider working double shifts to commission the project by the December quarter.

Major miners BHP Billiton, Anglo American and Xstrata, along with Johannesburg stock exchange-listed Exxaro and coal-to-liquids specialist Sasol, are RBCT shareholders.
