The accident at 10:35am (AEST) yesterday did not injure the two drivers of the coal train.

A spokesperson for the coal hauler said the crossing was protected by stop signs and railway crossing warning signs.

“Police, ambulance and fire officers attended the scene,” the spokesperson said.

“QR National will work with police and emergency services as part of the investigation into the accident.”

The man who survived the accident is at Moranbah Base Hospital with serious chest and head injuries according to AAP.

BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance’s Goonyella Riverside mine is 30 kilometres north of Moranbah.

An expansion project aims to lift production capacity from the open cut mine and the nearby Broadmeadow longwall operation from a combined 16 million tonnes per annum to 24Mtpa.
