Columbia's El Cerrejon mine to cut output

COLUMBIA'S El Cerrejon coal mine, controlled by a consortium that includes BHP Billiton, Anglo American and Glencore, will cut its sales to 18.5 million tonnes in 2002 from 21Mt in 2001 due to weaker world demand.

The cut in production exceeded the originally planned 1Mtpa reduction which the consortium announced in March.

Cerrejon includes Cerrejon Zona Norte mine and the nearby Carbones de Cerrejon mine.

In February, the consortium purchased the 50% of Cerejon it did not already own from Exxon Mobil Corp for an undisclosed price.
