Consol Executive named

CONSOL Energy has named Peter B. Lilly as its chief operating officer-coal, effective October 28, 2002.

Staff Reporter

Previously Lilly was president and chief executive officer of Triton Coal Company and Vulcan Coal Holdings.

"In Pete Lilly we have a proven leader and experienced senior manager," said J. Brett Harvey, Consol president and chief executive officer. "His background and career experience are an excellent match for our coal segment."

Lilly, a native of Beckley, West Virginia, is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and holds a Master of Business Administration degree in Industrial Marketing and Operations Management from Harvard University. Prior to joining Triton Coal Company, Lilly held a number of senior management positions, including president and chief operating officer with Peabody.

"Pete has had managerial experience with mines in virtually all of the coal producing regions where Consol Energy operates," Harvey said. "I expect him to have an impact almost immediately on the overall efficiency of our mines and preparation plants, as well as to coordinate coal production and coal sales and marketing activities."

With 24 mines located in seven states in the United States, Canada and Australia, and a total annual production of over 70 million tons, Consol is the biggest coal mining company in the US. Lilly will be responsible for all coal activities

"This has been a disappointing year for our coal segment," Harvey said. "Market conditions forced us to temporarily idle some operations to balance supply with demand. Now that inventory levels at U.S. power plants and at our mines are returning to normal, it is essential that our mines run well through the end of the year.

"Most importantly, we need to get off to a good start in 2003. Pete's mission is to drive costs down, raise productivity, and strengthen market share and customer service in our key market areas."
