Automated Russian coal mine in production

PRESS reports from Russian Itar-Tass have said the first automated coalmine went into production Wednesday.

Staff Reporter

The Kotinskaya mine is located in the dominant coal mining Kemerovo region in Siberia, where over 100 coal mines are located.

The report said the mine had paid 1,500 million roubles for the equipment. The coal mine will annually produce around three million tonnes of coal for thermal power stations.

Itar-Tass quoted Kemerovo Region Governor Aman Tuleyev saying: "This coalmine is notable for the use of remote-controlled subterranean equipment, an up-to-date conveyor transportation and wireless communication between mineworkers who monitor the production process. This substantially raises the safety of labour".

Production from the Kemerovo Region is close to 150 million tonnes a year. Another 15 coalmines, quarries and coal-concentrating factories are currently under construction in the region with production expected to reach 200Mt of coal a year.
