The contract covers surface mining of the existing pit plus a new greenfield operation at Dawson North near Moura.

The executive general manager of the company’s resources division, Steven Keyser, said the contract gave Leighton a platform to build a strong relationship with AAMC.

“Our experience and knowledge in surface mining in the Bowen Basin will enable us to provide a full range of services at the mine that will support and add value to its future development,” he said.

“Our expertise and strong relationships with our suppliers have also ensured that we have the necessary equipment ready to mobilise for the project on day one,” Leighton Mining general manager Greg Fokes said.

The Dawson mine in the southern Bowen Basin holds more than 280 million tonnes of coal reserves and annually produces more than 7Mt of metallurgical and thermal coal.

Leighton shares are up 20c to $32.65 this morning.
