According to a report in Milenio this week, the smaller operations in the state of Coahuila were mainly idled for safety reasons.
The newspaper said six of those ordered to stop had since been improved to comply with the country’s standards but two others had been shut down.
Under a special operation that is reportedly set to run through March, the Mexican labour and social security department is working with geological services to monitor the country’s operations in an effort to reduce accident rates at small pits.
The state of Coahuila produces about 95% of Mexico’s coal.
