BMA continues cost-saving push

SUPPLIERS have been urged to improve how they communicate as coal miners such as the BHP Billiton-Mitsubishi Alliance strive to further reduce their costs.

"We are continuing to make hard decisions and remain committed to changing the culture of the industry," BMA head of supply Damien Matthews said at an industry luncheon on Friday, the ABC reported.

"If we can't contribute competitively, then someone else will and the loss will be ours."

Mackay Area Industry Network director and G&S Engineering Services managing director Mick Crowe warned that suppliers needed to sell their message better.

“It's up to us to find the right way to communicate the real value we know this community can add to the mining industry," he reportedly said.

"If we as suppliers can articulate the real value of what we're supplying, just like you at the supermarket, you might not buy the cheapest one because you understand the value in the other."
