Parent company Walter Energy spokesperson Michael Monahan told ILN that the workers, whose identities have not been disclosed, were injured from a rock that fell from inside a borehole being drilled next to a new ventilation shaft at the operation in Brookwood.

Both were transported to a local medical facility and one was kept for observation and released Tuesday morning. The second underwent surgery for a broken leg and is expected to be released by Friday.

“Walter Energy is leading a full investigation into the cause of the incident,” Monahan said.

Local news station WBRC said the mine had not closed as a result of the accident; Walter did not confirm the mine’s production status.

A request for comment and details from the US Mine Safety and Health Administration was not returned Wednesday afternoon.
