ONE miner has reportedly died in a cave-in at an operation in Cucunuba, the first known Colombian coal-related fatality in the coal-rich country in 2012.

According to the Latin American Herald Tribune, the victim killed January 5 was 24-year-old Jonathan Cardona Marin. A second unnamed injured survivor was taken to a local medical center.

Colombia’s mining regulatory agency Ingeominas did not disclose the name of the operation to the news service, only confirming that it was in a rural area about 93 miles (150km) from Bogota.

Fifteen miners were working at the mine at the time of the accident, and a regulatory official told the paper that the operation will have a complete inspection to determine its safety for mining.

It is the first known death in coal in Colombia this year, though three gold miners were killed last week at an unregulated mine in Colombia’s Antioquia province following a gas explosion.
