181 coal miners feared dead

RESCUE workers continue to pump water out of two coal mines that were flooded in eastern China on Saturday, where 181 miners are missing and feared dead.

Staff Reporter

News agency Xinhua reported the miners had a slim chance of survival and said there are rumours that rescue operations have already been abandoned.

One of the mines, located 450km south of Beijing, was flooded when a nearby river overflowed, sending water into a shaft and trapping 172 miners, Xinhua reported. Nine more were trapped when water poured into the neighbouring coal mine.
