The China Daily reports China's National Development and Reform Commission announced the figures, which demonstrate the extent of China's booming economy and hunger for coal when compared with figures from the year before.

The country's total coal output increased 12.7% on the previous year's monthly figures to reach 196 million tonnes in July.

While imports rose dramatically, exports dropped 21.2% to 28.86 million tonnes.

Chinese President Hu Jianto is in Australia this week for the APEC forum and made a brief visit to Western Australia, the first time a Chinese president has ever done so.
