Roof collapse at Mach Mine

PRODUCTION at Mach Mine in Williamson County, Southern Illinois has shut down after a 35-foot section of the slope roof fell.

Staff Reporter

No workers were underground at the time of the collapse and no one was hurt; however, the mine has been shut down until a full inspection of the site can be completed by the US Mine Safety and Health Administration.

It has been speculated that recent wet and humid weather at the minesite may have weakened the roof and that if workers had been underground at the time of collapse they would not have been trapped because of the mine's dual entry points.
