The company sold 503,000 tonnes of coal during the quarter, the majority from its wholly owned Canyon and Tarrawonga opencut mines.

The mines produced 475,000t of ROM coal during the quarter, a 103% increase on the amount produced for the same time during the previous fiscal year.

Coal sales were boosted by its 40% interest in the Werris Creek Coal mine that totalled 309,000t ROM production for the quarter.

When announcing the strong results Whitehaven Coal said production at its Tarrawonga mine was constrained by coal terminal restrictions and that a new excavator and high capacity trucks have been purchased by the company in a bid to reduce operation costs.

It now awaits New South Wales Planning Minister Frank Sartor's determination on the development application submitted for its first longwall mine, Narrabri.

According to the company, site design work for the Narrabri project is well advanced and construction of the mine will start soon after the decision is announced.
