US Mine Safety and Health Administration spokeswoman Amy Louviere told International Longwall News a worker, whose name remains undisclosed, was initially conscious and talking following an accident at UAE CoalCorp’s Harmony mine, but later reports from those at the scene confirmed the death.

“This … District 1 [miner] was partially covered by a rock fall,” she said. She added that an MSHA inspector was on site and additional personnel were en route, as were members of the agency’s technical support team.

The Associated Press Monday afternoon identified the miner as being 40 years of age and said that once at the surface, he was airlifted to a local hospital. It is unclear if his time of death occurred underground.

The fatality is the third for the state of Pennsylvania in 2008 and the 15th for the US.
