Reported by the Jakarta Globe, coal, mineral and geothermal director general Bambang Gatot Arioyono said the nation had produced only 30 million tons of coal, falling short of the government target of 60Mt.

The government was now urging local producers to ramp up production.

Indonesia is the world’s leading thermal coal producer.

According to figures gathered by the Reserve Bank of Australia from the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics, AME Mineral Economics and the International Energy Agency, 27% of global thermal coal exports came from Indonesia in 2007.
