Moonee longwall mine closes

THE closure of the Wallarah Coal Joint Venture's Moonee coal mine at Catherine Hill Bay in NSW marks the end of a 129 year history.

Staff Reporter

The mine’s longwall has been brought to the surface and the decommissioning of the coal washery is under way.

Some 120,000 tonnes of coal is yet to be delivered from the mine in the next three months.

The mine’s closure was indicated last year by the mine's former owners, BHP-Billiton subsidiary Coal Operations Australia, because reserves were not economically recoverable.

LakeCoal bought BHP-Billiton's 80% shareholding in the Wallarah Coal Joint Venture in April this year and has progressed the closure plans.

Moonee has been the site of some extraordinary research into a range of technical issues, including managing windblast and controlling goaf collapse.
