A ONE billion ton coal field was recently discovered in north west China.

Angie Tomlinson

The huge reserve is located in Hutubi County, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, according to service and consulting company AAA Minerals International (AMI).

The coal field measures 12.5 kilometres in length and 8.5 kilometres across.

AMI said the reserve was simple in geological structure and has four mineable coal seams. Samples taken show the coal has a low sulphur content and a high heating value.
