While the figure was unacceptably high, it was down 13.7% on 2002 and coal mine accidents decreased by 5.9%.

SAWS deputy director Zhao Tiechui told Xinhua that coal mine accidents took up 39.8% of the total accidents in China last year and the death toll accounted for 42.3%.

China has started to implement safety measures but are yet to see the results.
