UK mines receive £16.5 million funding

GOVERNMENT funding totaling £16.5 million has been allocated to the UK coal industry under the second Coal Investment Aid (CIA) application period.

UK energy minister Mike O’Brien announced the hand-out on Thursday last week.

Nine coal mines will receive this round of funding. The CIA program was launched last year with a total budget of £60 million to support investment projects at qualifying coal mines.

The money is being awarded in three applications periods with the third and last due in 2005.
