More gas monitors for Chinese mines

CHINA’S authorities say they will be targeting low-gas coal mines throughout the country to install gas monitoring equipment in a move to improve mine safety in the fatality-ridden industry.

According to a China Daily report, all legal high-gas mines and 69.3% of low-gas mines had gas monitoring systems installed by the end of 2006.

For the third successive year, the Government will give 3 billion yuan ($US375 million) in funding to support safety technology innovation in state-owned mines.

The Government will also continue efforts to shut down small illegal mines.
