Department chief mineral economist for coal and hydrocarbons Xavier Prevost told South Africa’s Business Report three of the new mines will be anthracite mines, while the other mines will produce bituminous coal.

Prevost said the number of new mines depended on how the empowerment partners for these ventures were organised.

The small-scale operations will supply both the domestic and export markets.
